SANTA CLARA, CA – September 19, 2002 – Atypon Systems and CrossRef announced today the launch of the enhanced CrossRef reference linking service, built by Atypon. Using Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), the service connects bibliographic references between publishers.

With Atypon's innovations in place, the new CrossRef system:

  • Links other content types, such as major reference works and conference proceedings in addition to electronic journals.
  • Improves the citation matching through fuzzy matching.
  • Increases scalability and performance.
  • Facilitates system administration and monitoring capabilities for advanced reporting.

Atypon's Literatum e-publishing software, which currently powers websites such as Academic Press' IDEAL Library and Blackwell Publishing' Synergy electronic journal platform, has been customized to fit the CrossRef system requirements. It is a modular solution that can be leveraged for multiple electronic content types and provides sophisticated access control, administration, e-commerce models, and usage reporting functionality.

"We are very excited about this successful launch of the new CrossRef system. A few of the immediate benefits are a 5-fold increase in matching, integration of new content types, and decreased system administration resources required," said CrossRef Executive Director, Ed Pentz. "Thanks to our partnership with Atypon, they have proactively resolved issues and made enhancements at no additional cost."

"By extending Literatum, our advanced publishing system, with sophisticated fuzzy matching technology, Atypon has created a solution that serves CrossRef, its member publishers, and ultimately every researcher and scholar," stated Atypon CEO, Georgios Papadopoulos. "Literatum's performance, functionality, and reliability make it the ideal platform to offer new services in the future."

"With Atypon's technology in place, we have seen significant improvements in system performance, and ease of administration," said Chuck Koscher, CrossRef's Director of Information Technology. "The data migration went very smoothly and all change requests have been handled quickly and efficiently. Atypon's responsiveness and dependability allow us to focus our attention on moving forward with new projects."

"Atypon is pleased to be able to provide a technology backbone for such an important industry initiative," said Ravi Singh, Atypon VP of Corporate Development. "CrossRef joins a list of clients who have all enjoyed the benefits of working with Atypon, such as the highest quality of technology, flexibility, and responsiveness in meeting their needs and the determination to drive long term value as a strategic partner. We look forward to expanding our partnership with CrossRef."
