Knight Ridder Digital Uses eMeta to Enable Online Registration

eRights Suite Rolled Out to Nine of KRD's Online Newspaper Properties

NEW YORK June 21, 2004 -- eMeta Corporation, the leading provider of digital information access and commerce solutions, today announced that Knight Ridder Digital, a pioneer in electronic publishing, is using eMeta's eRights Suite to support the registration initiatives at many of its online newspaper properties. Examples include: Philly.com, the online home of both The Philadelphia Daily News and The Philadelphia Inquirer, Herald.com, the online home of The Miami Herald, and MercuryNews.com, the online home of The San Jose Mercury News.

"eMeta's solution meets our access control and authentication requirements, and does so in a way that is easy-to-use and as transparent as possible for our millions of Web visitors," said Anna Zornosa, CMO of Knight Ridder Digital. "The registration process is vital to our business moving forward, as well as to increasing our levels of customer service and retaining our visitors' interest."

A number of newspaper Web sites have recently introduced user registration, and publishers of all types are increasingly requiring readers to provide basic demographic data in exchange for free access to online content. By having the demographic makeup of each Web site visitor, publishers are able to customize and deliver the kinds of information, offers and services that are of the most interest to each reader or groups of readers.

"As part of our ongoing commitment to providing the information our customers need in the manner they need it, we conducted an industry-wide search to find the best technology partner for our demanding environment, ultimately selecting eMeta," said Phillip Crawley, Publisher and CEO, The Globe and Mail. "eRights gives us the flexibility and capability to enhance and tailor our online offerings."

The eRights Suite is an open infrastructure software solution that facilitates the access control and sale of digital content and services, and gives publishers a number of tools to customize their offers to readers. In addition to facilitating registration, segmentation and customization of content and data, eRights enables a variety of online commerce transaction types including free product trials, recurring billing and micropayments.

"Registration is critical to the future of online newspapers," said Jonathan Lewin, eMeta's Chief Executive Officer. "As more and more newspaper publishers embrace this model, readers will benefit from a more compelling personalized user experience."
