ASM International Launches Online Library Using eMeta Technology eRights Software Expands Access to 20-Volume Reference Resource on Metals and Materials NEW YORK, NY - July 25 , 2002 - ASM International, the world's leading materials information society, has made its 20-volume ASM Handbook available on a subscription basis through technology from eMeta Corporation. Using eMeta's flagship eRights software, ASM International expects to vastly expand the reach and access of the most comprehensive resource on metals, engineered materials and processes to its 40,000 members, as well as to businesses, academic institutions and professionals working with metals and materials. An enterprise software solution, eRights enables ASM International to effectively manage the user authentication and flexible subscription levels necessary to facilitate the society's first-ever paid digital content offerings. Using eRights, ASM International is able to offer its members yearly, unlimited access to the entire handbook collection for $179 - roughly the average cost of purchasing a single hardcover volume. Nonmembers can gain similar access for $279; and academic or corporate licenses are offered starting at $1500. "In the short time we've gone live, we've gotten far better usage response from our members than we expected," said Leslie Chom, Manager of ASM Online Services, "and we anticipate this move will be particularly valued by our international members, who are located in some 100 countries around the world. In addition, we're really excited about being able to expand our information offerings outside our core membership. After all, everything is made of materials - so everybody should be able to access the best resource on materials." Moving its handbook collection online gives ASM International greater flexibility in its information offerings, while providing better value for its members and other subscribers. For example, while the society typically updates one volume every year, this usually results in only about a 20% change in the average 1,000 pages. With an online subscription, those owning previous handbook editions gain access to the latest information without having to buy an entirely new volume - and access to the latest updates across all 21 volumes at a considerable cost savings. Moreover, ASM International is now able to more quickly update information across the whole series without incurring traditional publication costs and delays. By the end of the year, the society anticipates completing the second phase of its online publishing initiative, using eRights to move the ASM Alloy Center - a collection of some 8,000 two-page data sheets plus its extensive property databases - into the online suite. This will not only give subscribers specific information about a particular alloy or process, but will also enable them to make inquiries about a particular functionality or need - for example, a query for an aluminum casting alloy with tensile strength of 33000 psi that takes a high polish could be linked to an Alloy data sheet on Ternalloy 8. "Our latest project with ASM International is further proof of our ability to help our customers get their digital content commerce operations up and running quickly, easily and securely," said Ethan Mollick, eMeta's Vice President of Business Development. "We tell potential customers they can generally expect to complete installation of our eRights software platform in three to four months' time. We first announced our partnership with ASM International on April 1. It's now July, and they've completed the first phase and already working on the next."
